The European Union has reached a preliminary agreement on climate goals for 2040, after intense negotiations lasting over 18 hours. The main objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to 1990 levels, but it has been agreed that each country can purchase 'carbon credits' to achieve 5% of this reduction. This means that the actual reduction for the European industry could be only 85%.
Some countries, such as Poland and the Czech Republic, have expressed skepticism about this goal, fearing the impact on their economies. The compromise includes postponing the emissions trading system until 2028. EU representatives emphasize that it is essential to maintain a balance between environmental protection and economic interests, in the context of the COP30 summit in Brazil.
