Romania had a remarkable performance at the 2026 European Physics Olympiad, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from June 12 to 16, winning two gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze. The five medal-winning students come from the International Theoretical High School of Computer Science in Bucharest, with gold medals obtained by Alexandru Condrea and Vlad Bolohan. Andrei Vila and Bogdan Ciocârlan won the silver medals, while Teodor Bichir secured the bronze. The national team was coordinated by Associate Professor Dr. Sebastian Popescu and Lecturer Dr. Mihai Vasilescu, physics professors from prestigious universities in Romania. Students from 41 countries participated in the competition, including from outside Europe. The Ministry of Education and Research supported the team's participation logistically and financially, covering travel costs and organizing the preliminary stages. Representatives of the ministry congratulated the team for their outstanding achievements at the European level.
