According to the Italian consumer associations Codacons and Udicon, the price of industrial chocolate has exceeded 77 euros per kilogram, recording an increase of up to 10% compared to the previous year. This increase has generated outrage, not only due to the cost but also because of the size of Easter eggs, with 46% of consumers reporting that they are visibly smaller.
Despite these economic challenges, the Easter tradition remains strong in Italy. Carola, a young woman from Milan, emphasizes the importance of the moment spent with family, even though the size of the eggs has decreased. In the pastry shops near the Vatican, Alejandra mentions that 'Colomba', the traditional Easter cake, has become a refuge for affected budgets, having only a 3% price increase.
The ritual of breaking the chocolate egg symbolizes the Resurrection and is an important social gesture in the community. However, three out of four Italians feel the need to change their habits, seeking eggs with less chocolate or giving up luxury brands to keep the tradition alive.
