The national currency of Romania, the leu, appreciated on Friday against the euro, which was quoted by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) at 5.2364 lei, down by 2.97 bani (-0.56%) compared to the previous quote. Additionally, the leu also increased compared to the dollar, which was quoted at 4.4493 lei, down by 2.34 bani (-0.52%). Against the Swiss franc, the leu was quoted at 5.7194 lei, down by 3.24 bani (-0.56%).
The appreciation of the leu comes against a backdrop of political tensions, generated by the withdrawal of PSD support for Ilie Bolojan and the motion of censure against the Government. Since the beginning of this period of instability, the leu has recorded a series of negative records, with an accelerated depreciation of its value. On May 5, the official exchange rate rose to 5.2180 lei/euro, continuing the trend of fluctuation of the national currency.
