The analysis of the president of the Intelligent Energy Association, Dumitru Chisăliță, highlights that the price of fuels in Romania is not determined solely by the evolution of oil, but also by the constant increase in taxes and excise duties. Between 2020 and 2026, diesel increased from 4.73 to 8.67 lei/liter (+83%), while gasoline rose from 4.81 to 8.24 lei/liter (+71%). The share of taxes in the final price increased from 63% to 69%, which means that almost 7 out of 10 lei paid at the pump are destined for the state budget.
Excise duties have increased by 62%, and VAT by 64-70%, while the price of Brent crude oil has risen by 62%. Chisăliță emphasizes that taxation has become the main axis in determining fuel prices, and the increase is not just the result of fluctuations in the oil market, but also a choice of economic policy. Additionally, operational costs, such as transportation and refining, have significantly increased, contributing to the structural rise in fuel prices in Romania.
