According to an analysis conducted by the Intelligent Energy Association (AEI), the increase in fuel excise duties, scheduled for January 1, 2026, along with the VAT increase in the summer, will lead to an estimated price increase of approximately 0.3 lei per liter of gasoline and diesel. Thus, prices could reach 7.61-7.64 lei/l for gasoline and 7.8-7.83 lei/l for diesel.

Although the tax changes are considered moderate, the cumulative effect will translate into significant additional costs for drivers, with tens of lei more for each full tank and several hundred lei per year. In 2024, the excise duties were 2.38 lei/l for gasoline and 2.32 lei/l for diesel, and in 2026, they will increase to 3.06 lei/l and 2.80 lei/l, respectively, while the VAT will remain at 21%.
