Gas market liberalization from 2027: until then, the price will no longer be capped, but managed for household users and district heating plants, starting from April 1, 2026.

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced a reform of natural gas prices, which will come into effect between April 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027. During this period, the price of gas will be managed by the state, replacing the old capping scheme that generated significant debts. This measure aims to stabilize costs for household consumers and district heating plants, ensuring a fixed tariff, while prices for non-household consumers will be dictated by the market. The government is counting on an oversupply of gas from the Black Sea, which will keep prices at a low level. The Prime Minister emphasized that by 2027, Romania will be able to fully liberalize the gas market, having a supply that will exceed demand. Additionally, there is a focus on reindustrialization, with the aim of processing the gas extracted in Romania, thus generating new jobs.
