The National Bank of Romania reported a decrease in foreign exchange reserves of over 2.1 billion euros in April 2026, reaching 64.836 billion euros, compared to 67.032 billion euros at the end of March. During this period, inflows of 1.8 billion euros were recorded, coming from changes in the minimum reserves held by credit institutions and the funding of the Ministry of Finance's accounts.
At the same time, outflows totaled 3.996 billion euros, including payments for public debt in foreign currency and other obligations. Gold reserves remained constant at 103.6 tons, with a value of 13.171 billion euros. As of April 30, 2026, Romania's international reserves (currencies plus gold) were 78.007 billion euros, down from 80.278 billion euros at the end of March.
At the same time, the euro reached a historic high against the leu, which could lead to increased costs for Romanians in various areas, including foreign currency rates and imported products.
