The European Commission recently approved the support measures notified by Romania for the Investment and Development Bank (BID), an institution created to facilitate access to financing for companies and strategic projects. The decision allows for an increase in the bank's capital by one billion euros, of which 100 million euros come from a loan through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism. Additionally, the state guarantee granted to BID will be extended until 2032.
These measures are intended to strengthen BID's capacity to attract financing for SMEs, infrastructure, and strategic sectors, including health, education, and renewable energy. The Commission assessed the support according to EU rules on state aid, concluding that it is necessary for sectors facing difficulties in obtaining financing.
BID, established in 2022, serves to complement the activities of commercial banks and to support projects facing difficulties in attracting private capital.
