Social protection expenditure amounted to 264.389 billion lei in 2023, an increase of 15.4% compared to the previous year, according to the NSI.

In 2023, expenditure for social protection totaled 264.389 billion lei, of which 259.756 billion lei for social benefits, representing an increase of 15.4% compared to 2022. Social protection revenues reached 259.431 billion lei, up by 12.1%. The share of social protection expenditure in GDP was 16.5%, similar to 2022, with a focus on old-age and health risks. Data are semi-final and will be updated in November 2025.
