Ryanair has identified seven destinations that will be removed from Charleroi Airport, including Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Lodz, Oviedo, Rovaniemi, Billund, and Catania. This decision comes in response to the increase in airport fees imposed by the Belgian government and the municipality of Charleroi, which has led the company to reduce the number of aircraft based in Charleroi. The chairman of the BSCA board and the general director have expressed concern that the withdrawal could affect routes from Eastern Europe. Ryanair has already announced the removal of the Bucharest – Edinburgh route from March 2026 and has threatened to cut another 20 routes from Europe due to rising costs. The company harshly criticizes the new air taxes, arguing that they will lead to increased ticket prices and a decrease in demand. Ryanair warns that Belgium is becoming uncompetitive compared to other EU countries that have eliminated taxes to stimulate tourism. It also criticizes plans to introduce a fee of 3 euros per departing passenger from Charleroi, which could lead to significant job losses.
