Romania's total external debt reached 222.3 billion euros in the first eight months of 2025, according to data published by the BNR on Tuesday.

In the first eight months of 2025, Romania's external debt increased by 18.8 billion euros, reaching 222.3 billion euros. Long-term debt represents 77.8% of the total, with a balance of 172.8 billion euros, up 10.5% compared to 2024. The external debt of the public administration increased by 14.9 billion euros, while the long-term external debt service ratio decreased to 14.8%. The import coverage ratio was 5.9 months, and the coverage of short-term external debt was 102.6%.
