Romania’s foreign exchange reserves fell by €4.805 billion in September 2026, reaching €60.060 billion on September 30, compared with €64.865 billion at the end of August, according to data published by the National Bank of Romania.
During the month, foreign currency inflows totaled €3.302 billion. These came, among other sources, from changes in the foreign currency minimum reserves held by credit institutions at the National Bank of Romania and from funds being credited to the accounts of the Ministry of Finance.
Outflows were higher, however, totaling €8.107 billion. Of this amount, approximately €2.684 billion represented principal and interest payments on foreign-currency-denominated public debt. Payments were also made from the European Commission account, along with other transactions.
The gold reserve remained at 103.6 tonnes. At international prices during the period under review, its value was estimated at €12.280 billion.
Overall, Romania’s international reserves, comprising foreign currency and gold, reached €72.340 billion on September 30, down from €77.627 billion on August 31. In October, payments of approximately €350 million on foreign-currency public debt are due.
