Independent MEP Nicu Ştefănuţă draws attention to Europe's excessive dependence on oil imports, which account for up to two-thirds of total energy consumption. In a Facebook post, he emphasizes that oil sources are often controlled by dictators and hostile states, which amplifies Europe's vulnerability. Ştefănuţă proposes that European states invest in alternative renewable energy sources, tax energy companies that make huge profits during the crisis, and redirect these benefits to citizens.
He offers the example of Moldova, which has managed to reduce its dependence on Russian imports by adopting renewable technologies. The MEP warns that delaying necessary measures will lead to increasing costs for Europe, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive vision for a sustainable energy system.
