NASA has announced the layoff of approximately 550 employees from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), representing 11% of the workforce, following a reorganization initiated in July 2023. JPL Director Dave Gallagher emphasized that these cuts are not related to the suspension of government activity, but are part of a strategy to adapt to budget constraints. Since the beginning of 2024, JPL has laid off over 1,500 employees and contractors, citing uncertainties related to the Mars Sample Return mission and political pressures to reduce NASA's size. This situation raises questions about the agency's ability to meet its ambitious goals in space exploration, especially in the context of competition with China. Experts warn that the loss of skilled personnel will negatively impact NASA's efforts to maintain leadership in the space domain.
