The coalition government of Germany, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, intends to reexamine trade policies towards China, considering the recent trade tensions between the two economies. To this end, an expert committee will be established to analyze trade relations relevant to security and make recommendations to the government. The committee will consist of twelve members, including academics, industry representatives, and union representatives. This initiative comes in the wake of restrictions imposed by China on rare metal exports, which have affected the German automotive industry. The committee will report to parliament twice a year, and the motion for its establishment is likely to be adopted soon. Germany has long considered China an important trading partner, but recent challenges have led to a reevaluation of this relationship.
