According to an unofficial document consulted by POLITICO, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Lithuania are urging the European Union to adopt tougher measures against unfair trading practices.
The document, sent to the European Commission and other member states on Friday, proposes the creation of more defensive trade instruments and more frequent initiation of investigations into violations of trade rules. Although China is not explicitly mentioned, references to it are evident through wording that indicates violations of the multilateral framework by certain trading partners. The five countries also request that the community bloc be more proactive in reporting these violations to the World Trade Organization. Other proposals include legislative changes to prevent foreign companies from evading trade investigations and the direct application of anti-subsidy duties.
The European Commission will hold a debate on May 29 regarding the EU's long-term strategy in relation to Beijing.
