The Minister of Economy and Trade of Spain, Carlos Cuerpo, stated on Thursday in Berlin that his country does not support a recent informal document proposed by France and other European states regarding strengthening trade protection against China. This position was expressed after Spain signed a document last week addressed to the European Commission, requesting measures against unfair trade practices from China. The withdrawal comes ahead of an important debate in Brussels, where new measures are being analyzed to protect European industries affected by Chinese products. Cuerpo emphasized that Spain prefers dialogue and economic cooperation, highlighting the openness of the Spanish economy to Chinese investments. This change in position highlights the divisions within the European Union, where member states have different approaches to trade relations with Beijing. The lack of unity could affect the EU's ability to respond to global economic challenges and competition from China, and European leaders will seek a balance between protecting the domestic market and maintaining stable trade relations.
