Dan Tănasă delivered a new xenophobic speech in Parliament, four days after he was sent to trial for incitement to hatred

AUR MP Dan Tănasă delivered another speech containing xenophobic statements targeting foreign workers, particularly those from Asia, in the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies on Monday, October 26. The lawmaker criticized immigration policies and attacked USR representatives, accusing them of supporting the arrival in Romania of workers „from the third world.”

During his intervention, Tănasă claimed that the authorities had „brought leprosy back” to Romania and associated workers from Bangladesh and Nepal with drug trafficking. He suggested that USR lawmakers move to Nepal, Pakistan or Bangladesh if they support the presence of foreign couriers in Romania.

The statements were made four days after the AUR MP was sent to trial at liberty for incitement to violence, hatred or discrimination. The Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice announced the indictment on October 22.

The case concerns a message published by Tănasă on August 19, 2025, in which he urged Romanians to refuse orders delivered by foreign workers and not to encourage the „import of unskilled workers from Asia and Africa.”

Context: Marian Godină’s Complaint and Previous Facebook Allegations in the Case of MP Dan Tănasă

Prior to the case being referred to court, former police officer Marian Godină notified the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice, requesting an investigation into insulting comments attributed to AUR MP Dan Tănasă that were posted on Facebook. Godină stated that expressions such as “snot-eater,” “you clap like a seal,” and “you’ve started bleating” were allegedly used, raising the possibility of classifying them as “abusive conduct” under provisions of the Criminal Code.

Along the same lines, Godină indicated that the parliamentarian had also allegedly been asked for clarifications regarding loans mentioned in his asset declaration and mentioned that Tănasă had allegedly deleted a post for which he had previously been reported, concerning the refusal of orders delivered by foreign citizens.
