Buzău Water Company cuts water losses by 13% using smart sensors

Buzău Water Company has reduced water losses in the network by 13%, to approximately 13% in August 2026, after installing noise loggers—smart acoustic sensors that detect hidden leaks.

The investment program began in 2026 in the municipality of Buzău, where losses reached 22–23% in October–November 2025. The operator has set a target of reducing them to no more than 20% by 2030.

Using artificial intelligence, the loggers monitor sounds and vibrations transmitted through pressurized pipelines. Unusual signals may indicate a leak, after which technical teams inspect the area, locate the damage and determine the necessary intervention.

More than 3,500 devices are due to be installed along the networks in the county. The monitoring map already includes the municipality of Buzău, the localities of Vernești, Valea Slănicului and Pătârlagele, as well as the municipality of Râmnicu Sărat.

Before this technology was introduced, leaks were identified through successive field checks on street networks and at service connections. The company says the new sensors shorten the time between detecting a suspected leak and intervening to repair the damage.
