In an interview with Digi24, former president Traian Băsescu discussed the impact of the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz on the global economy. Joking about his experience as a ship commander in the area, Băsescu emphasized the seriousness of the situation, mentioning that the Aramco refinery, one of the largest in the world, has been affected, and the oil terminal at Ras Tanura, the largest in the world, has been taken out of operation. He explained that currently, the Strait of Hormuz is closed, which will lead to a significant decrease in oil exports, considering that 20% of the world's oil exports pass through this strait. Băsescu predicted large increases in fuel and oil prices as a result of these events.
