Maria Săceanu, a 24-year-old Romanian woman, was murdered on December 20 in an apartment in the Tividale area of the UK by Benjamin Day, a forensic science student obsessed with the Dexter TV series. The young man, who was 19 at the time of the crime, admitted his guilt during the trial.
According to prosecutors, Day lured the victim into the room he had rented after contacting her through an online platform using a prepaid phone. He allegedly prepared the room to imitate the “kill room” from the series, covering the floor and walls with plastic sheeting and preparing equipment and cleaning products.
Investigators claim that the young man attacked Maria Săceanu 78 times. He later allegedly tried to conceal the evidence and dispose of the body, but abandoned the plan after injuring his hand. Day fled and then sought help from the police, claiming that he had been bitten by a fox.
The apartment owner alerted the police after another tenant noticed a trail of blood and discovered the crime scene. Day was arrested the next day at the hospital. Forensic doctors determined that the victim had tried to defend herself, but the serious injuries to her neck caused her death. The defense asked the court to take into account the defendant’s age and the fact that he had no criminal record.
