A 37-year-old Romanian man, Ionuț-Robert Marghiol, was sentenced to 25 years in prison in the United Kingdom for the sexual exploitation of several women in homes in the Manchester area. According to The Express UK, he took the victims’ money and documents and forced them into prostitution.
Marghiol approached the women and tried to gain their trust, sometimes through promises of love. One of the victims was lured in 2019 with the prospect of a holiday in Spain, but was forced into prostitution for ten months; the exploitation then continued in the United Kingdom for approximately five years.
Another victim, aged 18 when she arrived in the United Kingdom, tried to quit after a few days, but was prevented from leaving and repeatedly assaulted. The women were taken to apartments and houses in Manchester, Bolton and Bury or to clients. The court found that the defendant intimidated them with a baseball bat and that he forced one of the victims to have his portrait tattooed on her thigh.
The investigation began in 2024, after two women reported the abuse at a police station in Essex. They described assaults, repeated rapes and psychological trauma. In the same case, three other Romanians received prison sentences. The court imposed human trafficking prevention measures on all of them, applicable even after their release.
