Cristian Popa, a member of the BNR Board of Directors, emphasized that Romanians abroad sent approximately 60 billion euros to Romania between 2013 and 2025, a significant amount that exceeds the value of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. In 2024, remittances reached 6.7 billion euros, representing almost 2% of GDP, but external payments increased by 60% compared to the previous year, reaching 1.7 billion euros. This trend of declining net remittances is influenced by global economic uncertainties and the repatriation of families abroad.
The geographical structure of remittances shows that almost half comes from the United Kingdom and Germany, with a significant contribution from Ireland. Additionally, the amounts sent from Romania to other countries have increased, indicating a change in the dynamics of remittances. Popa emphasizes that remittances have a positive impact on the Romanian economy, reducing poverty and improving financial inclusion, but they cannot replace effective public policies. The labor force exodus continues to be a problem, and remittances, although beneficial, do not compensate for the losses of human capital.
