Banks in Romania are expanding their offerings for the diaspora, amid the strong financial ties of the approximately 5 million Romanians working abroad. The new products include accounts opened online, cards delivered outside the country, low-cost transfers and mortgage loans for purchasing homes in Romania.
Banca Transilvania launched the first dedicated package in 2025 and added benefits in 2026, including cashback and cards in lei and euros. Raiffeisen recently introduced the Diaspora Account, available online to Romanians in several European countries, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Moldova, with free transfers and preferential foreign-exchange rates.
A Frappe Digital analysis shows that 55% of Romanians in the diaspora return to the country at least twice a year, while six in ten come primarily to visit family. Four in ten keep their money in foreign-currency accounts, and 53% use cards for payments made in Romania.
In the mortgage segment, banks accept income earned abroad, but may require larger down payments, translated documents and additional guarantees. Fixed interest rates for the diaspora generally range between 4.7% and 5.7%, while variable rates can reach 8.5%. CEC Bank, Libra Internet Bank, Revolut and Salt Bank round out the offering with digital services and cross-border operations.
