AfD leader Alice Weidel claimed that Romanians in Germany are “plundering” the German social system, statements that were rejected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The MFA stated, in a press release, that it monitors public positions regarding the Romanian community abroad and uses diplomatic dialogue to convey Romania's reaction to statements considered discriminatory.
Following Weidel's statements, several Romanian leaders and politicians responded publicly. Sorin Grindeanu criticized the “collective indictment based on origin,” noting that Romanians working in Germany contribute to the economy and the functioning of public services. Virgil Popescu said that 519,200 Romanians work legally and pay contributions, while other leaders stated that any potential fraud must be analyzed individually, not used for generalizations.
In the same context, Dominic Fritz responded to Weidel and mentioned unofficial estimates regarding the Romanian community in Germany, while other officials reiterated that EU membership entails equal rights for citizens regardless of their country of origin.
