The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Dan Neculăescu, rejected on Thursday the allegations made by Alice Weidel, leader of Germany’s extremist AfD party, against Romanians in Germany. Weidel claimed that Romanian citizens are “looting” the German insurance system, statements described as discriminatory by several Romanian political leaders.
In an official statement, the MFA mentions neither Alice Weidel’s name nor the party she leads. The ministry says it is monitoring “all relevant public positions” concerning the Romanian community abroad, including the one in Germany, and emphasizes the important economic and social contribution of Romanians to the communities where they live.
The MFA rejects the political exploitation of Romanian citizens’ presence in European Union member states and states that it uses diplomatic dialogue to convey to public authorities Romania’s reaction to discriminatory statements.
Weidel’s statements were criticized by Sorin Grindeanu, Ilie Bolojan, and Dominic Fritz. George Simion, president of AUR, did not join the condemnatory reactions.
