Sorin Grindeanu criticized Alice Weidel, leader of Germany’s AfD party, after she launched an attack against Romanian migrants and accused them of abusing Germany’s social welfare system. The PSD leader’s reaction was conveyed on the X platform.
Grindeanu stated that “collective indictment based on origin” runs counter to the values on which the European Union was built. He argued that Romanians working in Germany contribute to the country’s economy and the functioning of its public services.
According to Grindeanu, three out of four working-age Romanians work in Germany, a proportion similar to that recorded among German citizens. In addition, more than 4,000 Romanians work as doctors and treat German patients.
The PSD leader accused Weidel of bringing xenophobia back into the debate and told her that Romanians deserve the same respect enjoyed by Germans who live, work, or travel in other European countries.
“Unlike you, I will defend the rights of Germans who work or travel in the EU, just as I am defending my Romanian compatriots today,” Grindeanu wrote.
In her message, Alice Weidel claimed that an increasing number of migrants from Romania receive child benefits, social assistance, and medical services. She stated that, in Magdeburg alone, expenses had increased twentyfold, to three million euros annually, and called for a change in migration policy.
