German police confiscated over 200,000 contraband cigarettes from a Romanian family traveling from Romania to Great Britain. The incident occurred on the A3 motorway, near Neumarkt, where a customs control unit from the Main Customs Office in Nuremberg stopped the vehicle for checks.

The driver, a 43-year-old man, initially stated that he was only transporting six bottles of wine, but customs officers noticed large cardboard boxes and bulky waste in the car. After they requested him to drive to a separate checkpoint, the man admitted that the boxes contained cigarettes.

Following the checks, over 200,000 cigarettes with Romanian tax stamps were discovered. The spokesperson for the Customs Office, Lara Hutzler, mentioned that this quantity exceeds the limits for personal consumption by 250 times.

Additionally, folded boxes specific to the transport of cigarettes were found, suggesting the man's prior experience in smuggling. The Romanian was reported, and the cigarettes were confiscated, with the investigation taken over by the Customs Investigation Office in Munich.
