Following a control carried out in Săpoca, customs inspectors and police officers from the Organized Crime Combat Unit in Buzău discovered over three million hidden cigarettes in trucks.
The smuggled goods were found in a truck driven by a 53-year-old Greek man, where 2,560,000 cigarettes without tax markings were hidden among frozen fish pallets. Additionally, a van driven by a 30-year-old Romanian was transporting 777,720 cigarettes with tax markings from the Republic of Moldova, hidden among boxes of footwear. The two drivers are being investigated for smuggling and possession of cigarettes beyond legal limits, having been detained and will be presented to the prosecutor's office with a proposal for preventive arrest.
The estimated damage is 3.3 million lei, and the goods have been seized. The operation was supported by SAS Buzău and the gendarmes from IJJ Buzău.
