Four members of a Romanian family have been sentenced by the Besançon Court in France for attempting to abduct a 17-year-old girl, whom they allegedly tried to take to Romania against her will. The girl’s mother, father, aunt and brother disapproved of her relationship with a young man of Macedonian origin.
The mother received a two-year prison sentence for attempted abduction of a minor, aggravated assault and threats. The father was sentenced to 18 months, while the aunt and brother each received six-month prison sentences. All four were banned for three years from contacting the victim or living in Besançon.
The teenager had been placed under the protection of Child Protection Services after being assaulted by her parents. Her mother allegedly tried to check her virginity in front of other women in the family and later shaved her head after learning that the girl had had sexual relations with her boyfriend.
In February 2025, although the family was no longer allowed to contact her, several members went to the boy’s family home. Masked individuals dragged the teenager into a car, intending to take her to Romania. The vehicle was stopped at the Franco-German border. The girl said she feared she would be forced to live in isolation in Romania.
