A dramatic chase took place on the A1 motorway, near Florence, where a 30-year-old grandmother was stopped by the police while heading to Romania with her granddaughter, who was born just a few days earlier. The incident was triggered by a court decision to withdraw custody from the girl's mother, which prompted the grandmother to try to avoid the consequences of the ruling.
The grandmother, who was under house arrest, violated the terms of the arrest order and traveled to the hospital in Caserta, where her daughter had given birth, and kidnapped the baby. After a chase on the motorway, the Romanian grandmother was arrested for escape and for abducting the baby. The police launched a swift investigation after the girl's disappearance, managing to identify the car that was heading towards the border.
The interception of the vehicle occurred before the grandmother and granddaughter could leave Italy, and the newborn was entrusted to social services and transferred to the Meyer pediatric hospital in Florence.
