Carrefour, the French supermarket chain, is reevaluating its presence in Belgium, considering its definitive departure from the country after years of financial losses. The group announced that it will focus on the markets in France, Spain, and Brazil, without mentioning Belgium, which suggests a possible abandonment of this market. Carrefour is the third supermarket chain in Belgium, with 40 hypermarkets, 440 Carrefour Market supermarkets, and 300 Carrefour Express convenience stores, employing approximately 10,000 people.
The company is facing significant financial difficulties, with stable revenues around 4 billion euros, but affected by inflation and rising prices, which has led to a decrease in sales. Since 2021, Carrefour Belgium has reported operational losses, and in 2024, the losses reached 2.9 million euros, highlighting the ongoing challenges it faces in this market.
