The Austrian Ministry of Health has decided to declare the entire country a 'high-risk zone' for avian influenza (HPAI), starting from November 3, 2025, due to the increase in infection outbreaks in Europe, particularly in Germany. This measure has been imposed to prevent contact between wild birds and domestic ones, considering the seasonal migration of birds. So far, avian influenza has been confirmed in wild birds in five regions of Austria, without affecting domestic birds.
Authorities have emphasized that there is no risk to humans, and transmission of the virus through food is excluded. Citizens are urged to report any dead birds or suspicions of disease. Biosecurity measures are essential for protecting domestic bird populations, and authorities urge calm and caution.
