Senate President Mircea Abrudean condemned on Tuesday the statements made by Alice Weidel, leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, targeting Romanians who live and work in Germany. He described the remarks as “at the very least reprehensible” and a “lack of respect” toward the Romanian community, which consists of nearly one million people.

Abrudean’s reaction comes after Alice Weidel claimed that an increasing number of migrants from Romania were plundering the German social welfare system. The Senate president rejected generalizations and emphasized that any violation of the law must be assessed individually, based on facts and evidence.

Abrudean stated that politicians have an obligation to speak responsibly about people and communities, without turning nationality into a criterion for discrimination. He highlighted Romanians’ contribution to the German economy and society and argued that they cannot be judged through the lens of prejudices or statistics concerning social spending.

According to the Senate president, Romania must take a firm stance when its citizens are targeted by such rhetoric. He noted that membership in the European Union entails equal rights for all citizens, regardless of their country of origin.

Context: Alice Weidel launched accusations about “pressure” on the social system, and Dominic Fritz publicly responded

Before Mircea Abrudean’s reaction, AfD co-chair Alice Weidel claimed on the X platform that Romanian migrants were placing ever-increasing pressure on the German social system, citing the case in Magdeburg, where expenses were allegedly reaching three million euros annually, according to her message (20 times more than “in the past”).

The claims were challenged by USR leader Dominic Fritz, who publicly responded to Weidel in German and stated that hundreds of thousands of Romanians who work and contribute to social insurance live in Germany, urging the Romanian diaspora community to share his message.
