The former prime minister made harsh accusations against Laura Codruța Kovesi, the head of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, in an interview given to the Greek press. The interview comes after the European Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation into fraud with European subsidies in Athens, which members of the conservative party New Democracy of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis are alleged to have connections to.

"First of all, Mrs. Kövesi was promoted to a very high rank by some circles of the Romanian intelligence services (the former Securitate). She had never acted as a prosecutor, but she was strongly promoted in front of former President Băsescu. And Mr. Băsescu, with ties to the former Securitate, promoted her as attorney general. Then, when I became prime minister, she began to create political files. And it was a kind of compromise for us to accept her, Mr. Băsescu and I, the president and the prime minister, hoping that in the end she would act according to the law. It was a big mistake for both of us, because Mr. Băsescu and his family were also hunted by Mrs. Kövesi, just like me and my family," Ponta stated in the interview with The Power Game.
