The interim Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, stated that the intervention to increase the flow of the Danube towards the Nuclear Power Plant in Cernavodă has extended the operation of reactor 2, after specialists determined that, in the absence of measures, it should have been shut down. "We submerged the rock, we gained 4-5 days by submerging the rock. By detonating the rock, the barges were submerged and we also gained from the submerging of the barges," said Miruță.

The minister specified that the water level is continuously monitored, and the decision regarding the shutdown of the reactor will take into account the developments in the next 24-48 hours.

Regarding the criticisms from Traian Băsescu, who labeled the solution as a "patchwork", Miruță said he cannot comment on the specialists' decision. "I trust the specialists and I want you to know that part of what those specialists proposed was helpful. Apparently, it worked. We do not have the reactor shut down, we saved it for a few days. That nothing happened for more days, here we are," stated the interim Minister of Defense.
