A subterranean fire has been observed in the dried riverbed of the Mureșul Mort River, in the Mureșului Meadow Natural Park, according to information provided by the National Forest Administration - Romsilva. The phenomenon was first reported last year and continues to affect the natural habitat, even after recent rains. The situation is managed by a working group made up of specialists from several institutions, including the Arad Emergency Situations Inspectorate. A proposed solution is to flood the affected area with purified water while investigating the source of the fire. The first outbreak occurred in 2025, but the fire has significantly spread due to drought and wind, affecting approximately 30 hectares of forest land. Firefighters have intervened several times, but the subterranean fire persists, affecting vegetation and risking spread to nearby forests. The situation is constantly monitored by the staff of the natural park.
