Two drivers were taken to hospital after the cars they were driving collided yesterday morning in Bucharest’s Unirii Underpass. According to Daniel Băluță, the mayor of Sector 4, the victims suffered minor injuries.
The mayor says that the metal protective barriers installed in the underpass cushioned the impact and prevented the cars from hitting the concrete pillars or ending up in oncoming traffic. Băluță claims that these measures helped avoid more serious consequences.
The accident has once again drawn attention to the safety measures implemented in the Unirii Underpass, some of which have been disputed in the past. The mayor of Sector 4 says he will continue to prioritize people’s safety despite the criticism.
He said that road safety must remain the main criterion in managing infrastructure and presented the case as an example of how protective measures limited the effects of an accident. No further information was provided about the circumstances of the collision or the drivers’ condition after they were admitted to hospital.
