Giovanni Becali, a football agent, stated that he was convicted in the 'Transfer File' at the order of Traian Băsescu, accusing the former president of having requested to be "tapped" during the trial. Becali mentioned that his relationship with Băsescu was good at the beginning, but deteriorated during the trial. In response, Băsescu refused to comment on the accusations, stating that "any criminal believes that he is being pursued by the president." The trial in the 'Transfer File' took place between 2007 and 2014, involving several individuals from football who were accused of tax fraud, causing a damage of 1.5 million dollars to the state. Giovanni Becali was sentenced to 6 years and 4 months in prison, serving two years and six months before being conditionally released in 2016.
