Timișoara commemorates 36 years since the historic moment when it became the first city free from communism in Romania. On December 20, at 12:00, the sirens are activated for three minutes to honor the memory of the victims of the 1989 Revolution.
In the city center, 100,000 people shouted "Freedom", and the balcony of the Opera, a symbol of the Revolution, was once again filled with people who came to remember those who lost their lives. The events of December 16-17, 1989, were marked by arrests and violence, culminating in the brutal repression of protests. In Timișoara, 66 deaths and 196 injuries were recorded. In 2019, December 20 was officially declared the Day of Timișoara's liberation from communism.
