Thousands of people are expected in Novi Sad on Sunday to pay tribute to the victims of the catastrophe at the city’s railway station, a tragedy that triggered a major anti-government movement in Serbia.

The commemorative event comes shortly after significant political changes. About a week ago, the right-wing party in power was ousted following pressure from protests sparked by the railway station tragedy.

The catastrophe became the starting point for a major public mobilization, bringing together people who demanded that responsibility be assumed and that the circumstances surrounding the incident be clarified. The protests quickly took on a national dimension and fueled opposition to the governing party.

Sunday’s gathering is dedicated to the memory of the victims and marks one of the most significant events organized in Novi Sad since the tragedy occurred. According to AFP, attendance is expected to number in the thousands. The event takes place in a political context dominated by the consequences of the catastrophe and the recent shift in the balance of power.
