Starting Wednesday, citizens from 85 countries, including the United States, Canada, and member states of the European Union, will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter British territory. This measure, aimed at improving border security, was introduced for European citizens in April 2025, but there was a transition period during which border agents could be flexible. Now, passengers without an ETA will not be able to board planes or trains to the United Kingdom.

ETA, which costs £16 and is valid for two years, has been extended from citizens of Qatar to other nations. By September 2025, 19.6 million such authorizations have been issued. ETA is digitally linked to the passport and is processed quickly, generally within a few minutes. This initiative is similar to the American ESTA systems and ETIAS, which will be implemented by the European Union in 2026.
