The senators from the Legal Committee voted on Tuesday, May 19, on a report rejecting a bill aimed at repealing laws that prohibit organizations and symbols with fascist, racist, or xenophobic character.

The project, supported by parliamentarians from AUR, SOS, and POT, had previously received a favorable opinion from the Human Rights Committee, which generated negative reactions in the public space.

In the vote of the Legal Committee, only two senators voted 'for', while one abstained.

The initiators of the project argue that it is necessary to protect "freedom of expression"; however, this right has limits, according to the legislation in force.

The Economic and Social Council issued a negative opinion, and the project is set to be put to a vote in the plenary of the Senate. Judges have emphasized that hate speech affects the dignity of citizens and justifies state intervention in freedom of expression.
