The Ministry of National Defense of Romania has signed a contract with the Ministry of Armed Forces and Veterans of France for the acquisition of portable MANPAD MISTRAL air defense missile systems, worth 625,591,000 euros, excluding VAT. The contract includes 231 MANPAD MISTRAL systems, 934 missiles, training services, training ammunition, documentation, a simulator, and logistical support.

This acquisition is part of the European initiative 'European Joint Acquisition of Mistral System', coordinated by France, and involves other European states as well. The program is included in the Investment Plan for the European defense industry, according to the 'Action for the Security of Europe – SAFE' Regulation. The acquisition was approved by Parliament in June 2022 and will benefit the Romanian Army, including the Special Operations Forces.
