Romania’s Ministry of National Defence signed a contract on Tuesday, through the General Directorate for Armaments, worth approximately 326.5 million lei, excluding VAT, for the purchase of four mobile approach and landing control radar systems (RDAAM). The contract was awarded to Thales Romania SRL, with deliveries scheduled to begin in stages in 2028.
The new systems will modernize the Romanian Air Force’s air traffic control capabilities. They will enable the identification and tracking of aircraft, as well as their guidance during the approach and landing phases, including during the day and at night, in difficult weather conditions or in a hostile electromagnetic environment.
The equipment will be usable for both military and civilian aircraft, while the information collected can be transmitted to national and NATO air command and control systems. Their mobile nature will allow them to be installed at alternative locations, reducing dependence on the fixed infrastructure of air bases and increasing operational flexibility.
The acquisition is part of the Romanian Air Force’s modernization and procurement programs. According to the Ministry of National Defence, Thales Romania specialists and local partners will ensure the installation, integration and long-term availability of the systems. The ministry says the project will also contribute to the development of Romania’s defence industry through the transfer of know-how, specialized jobs and the strengthening of technological capabilities.
