Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Norway have signed a 1.9 billion euro agreement for Piorun air defense systems, funded through the EU's SAFE program.

Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Norway have agreed to place an order of 1.9 billion euros for thousands of portable air defense systems Piorun, manufactured by the Polish company Mesko.

The agreement, signed on Monday, will be financed through the EU's SAFE program, with Poland being the largest beneficiary of this program, having 43.7 billion euros available for the armed forces.

The Polish Minister of Defense, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, stated that this contract is the largest in history for Piorun missiles.

Each launcher, equipped with three missiles, costs 1 million euros, and from 2016 to 2025, Mesko will produce 3,000 launchers.

The Piorun systems are essential for the defense of NATO's eastern flank, having the capability to shoot down Russian aircraft and drones.

Moldova has ordered 44 launchers, and other countries, including the USA and Ukraine, have also requested Piorun systems.
