The Ministry of Internal Affairs, through the Coast Guard, has announced the initiation of procedures for the acquisition of an autonomous marine drone detection system, named TRITON.
This system, which will be tested in the first phase, is designed for long-duration missions and operates exclusively on solar and wind energy, without requiring fossil fuels or human crew. The tests will be coordinated by specialists from the Coast Guard, in collaboration with other competent structures, aiming to identify the best solutions for the protection of Romania's territorial waters against security risks. The announcement comes in the context of a recent incident in the Port of Constanța, where a Ukrainian drone caused the evacuation of over 3,000 people, without recording any casualties.
Ukrainian authorities informed Romania about the loss of control over the drone shortly before the explosion.
