The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) of Romania warns Romanian citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Mexico, especially in the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero, Colima, Aguascalientes, and Nayarit, due to the deterioration of the security situation following the killing of drug cartel leader, Nemesio Oseguera, known as 'El Mencho'. The MAE emphasizes that the number of robberies and violent crimes has increased, with tourists often being targeted. The ministry recommends avoiding travel in border regions and suggests using accredited travel operators. Romanian citizens are encouraged to register with the Romanian Embassy in Mexico City and to seek consular assistance if needed. The MAE highlights the importance of adhering to precautionary measures, such as avoiding travel at night and keeping documents secure. It is also recommended to obtain travel insurance and to monitor official information to remain safe.
