The Free Union of the Metro (USLM) warned on Wednesday, in a statement sent to Agerpres, that the Bucharest metro will stop in September 2026 if the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) does not pay the compensation.
Union members criticize the statements of interim minister Radu Miruță, who declared that the metro is a "black hole" of the Romanian economy. USLM emphasizes that Metrorex's debts are caused by the late payment of compensation, and by 2026 this will be 450 million lei less than the contract stipulates. Additionally, USLM rejects the idea that the metro should be subordinated to the Capital City Hall, arguing that it cannot effectively manage public transport.
The union demands that the minister stop "bringing false news" and provide the necessary compensation to ensure the operation of the metro.
The interim Minister of Transport, Radu Miruță, mentioned that Metrorex has debts to the electricity supplier, but negotiations are being attempted for the payment to be staggered.
Metrorex representatives stated that they make daily payments to reduce outstanding debts.
